As a cure for a moderator's disappointment and as atonement for my own stupidity in not getting what THEME meant, I offer a hasty pic-poem written in the excitement of receiving and watching my copy of the Making Of DVD from Japan. Wow! I decided that, if Gackt could train for 3 hours in the night to grow Kenshin's shoulders, the least I could do was to come up with a few lines of battle colours before the deadline! (which I hope is a US one - gives me the extra hours I need to think, type, construct the image packaging, upload and post)

Just hoping I get can some assistance from those more experienced...

- When phoning the hotline for tickets, do you speak to a real person or is it automated? And is it relatively simple to understand what they ask you?

- How specific is the phone number? Once you get through do you need to specify as far as 'Gackt', or just go straight for the venue?

- What sort of information will they ask for? Just venue/date, name, address and dears number?

Any help would be appreciated, I'm a little apprehensive about trying to do this.

The theme of colors will end July 25th, and with only ~~one participant: ME!~~ two participants *cries* I'm of course a bit disappointed, since we obviously have members, but I can't do much to convince people to participate besides themes. Thank you to those who comment on entries here!

Any ideas for next month's theme? I'm thinking PROMPTS, where a list of words will be given and you try a theme based around it/them. You can choose more than one word of course, but the limit is three. Any other ideas will be welcomed.

After reading a lot of BAWWWWWWW over the announcement of the fancy Gackt live audio CD set (among other Gackt issues), I have a few things to say.

Q: Gackt is a whore for money and a sell-out. We haven't had new content in over nine thousand months. The compilation set is ridiculous.

A: First of all, ￥21000 for THIRTEEN CDs ALONE is an awesome deal considering albums usually retail for ￥3000.　And even if it were only five CDs + 1 DVD, it would still be a sweet deal.

Unless you already have all of Gackt's concert DVDs and have listened to them lots, or have the audio ripped into MP3 format, or you bought the songs off iTunes AND you also bought all the tour pamphlets -- not an easy feat, the older they are, the harder they are to come by it seems to me -- how is this not cool?

Second of all, Gackt AND You have been talking about writing new music for the new album for MONTHS. NEW CONTENT IS ON THE WAY. IT'S GOING TO BE OKAY. Gackt is not selling out or quitting. He's got a gigantic tour coming up next year and does anyone remember how much Diabolos cost to put on? 500 MILLION yen -- that's over $4,000,000 USD. That's why Tamaly Bar closed and I'm pretty sure that's why the only tour in the last two years has been the small-scale fanclub-only DruG Party tour.

TL;DR summary:

"if you don't want it/if you feel like it's a rip-off, don't buy it. let your wallets do the talking. this isn't "gacktflation" or whatnot, artists in japan usually release exorbitantly expensive box sets like this. and people gladly buy them. so if the prices tick you off for items like this, don't buy them!

people have been theorizing gackt's career was going to end "soon" since, oh, 2001. people thought he'd be all done when moonchild came out. considering the man just got his first #1 oricon hit LAST YEAR why on earth would he quit making music any time soon?" --ifotismeni

Q: Gackt STILL hasn't released any CDs in America, and he still hasn't had any concerts anywhere other than Asia. Clearly he does not care about his fans/is a racist/etc.

A: Regarding the lack of American releases and tours elsewhere in the world: it sucks. I know. I'm holding my breath too. But Bunraku isn't out yet and to the average Westerner, Gackt is still nothing more than mysterious, queer-looking "Azn." At least that's what I've observed over the last four years.

It's also worth noting that musicians who sell record numbers of their albums in Japan have attempted to break out in America have FAILED UTTERLY.

In case you're new here, Sony created a new brand for releasing J Rock in the US and Canada, Tofu Records. It lasted about two and a half years before it went under. Besides several "various artists" albums and a variety of artists' albums, they released three L'Arc~en~Ciel albums and a concert DVD after L'Arc's very successful concert debut in the US. When Hyde went solo again in 2006 and sold out three California venues in under five minutes, they released "Faith" here too. And you know what happened?

Nothing. In spite of their attempts at reaching out to the vast number of anime fans, their sales were still dismal (from what I've heard).

And then there's Utada Hikaru, who has a very mainstream American-sounding R&B vibe. And her American release also went nowhere. I didn't even know one of her albums had even come out in the US until a fan informed me two years after the fact.

Gackt's record label/Dears is probably still trying to play it safe. But there is hope. At least Diabolos got a pretty wide-spread release, and we have Bunraku and its innate ability to market Gackt to look forward to.

Yeah that's it, just my wall 'o text. I have lots of L'Arc and Hyde media to post soon, though.

Hello everyone. I have a few questions about Gackts new tour.
i was wondering if anyone had any idea or previous experiance.

Well you see it goes like this.

I really have to see gackt, just like the rest of you of course! and im really planning on going to Japan for this 2008-2009 tour.

Well i have a few questions, maybe yu could help me with.

Are Tickets for Japanese concerts available to buy for foreigners? has anyone not living in Japan been able to buy tickets for shows in Japan..and how easy is it?

I heard Gackt and Hyde concets have sold out within minutes of going on sale in the past.

Would i need a japanese address or friend to help me aquire any tickets?
are there any websites that usually sell them that i can keep an eye on?

and yeah, just any past experiance you have of going to any concerts in Japan...like the planning you had to do, or unexpected problems ect. that i should look out for..or how easy / difficult it is to travel...
..that sort of thing.
...are there hostels / hotels 'a-plenty'?

.......or is it all too soon for this chat, and we should all slow down and wait a good while yet?

Looks like Cowboy Bebop is getting the live-action film treatment, so says iF Magazine. With so many Bebop fans out there, how exactly do producers plan on handling the source material?

According to producer Erwin Stoff: “I have such an enormous admiration for its creators, that our first and foremost concern is going to be a real degree of faithfulness to the tone of the movie, to the mix of genres, and so on and so forth,” he says. “When I met with them in Japan, one of the first things that I brought up was the experience that we had on A SCANNER DARKLY, and how hard we worked to remain faithful to Philip K. Dick, and that was our big concern here.”

The film, which is being developed for Fox Studios, was signed earlier this week. More news to come...Of course, we'll just add this to the ever-growing list of other anime to live-action films coming out, namely Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and DragonBall Z.

After finishing his role as Kenshin Uesugi and the filming of a Hollywood movie to be released in 2009, Gackt who has attracted a lot of attention as an actor, is at last resuming full on musical activity. Following the memories accumulated during his nine year solo career, a live album collection CD-BOX is planned.

In 1999, the solo project known as GacktJOB was started. A tour "MARS ~Visitor from the sky~" was held simultaneously with the albums release across the country. A highlight of his career was the first performance at Tokyo Dome in 2005. The staging continually evolved, with rain onstage, and Gackt riding a horse in to the arena. After seeing that magnificent world view, in one epic movie, deep feelings and thoughts are engraved on the audience's hearts. Every Christmas holiday, Gackt treats his fans to a Platinum Box, these boxes have featured videos (and now discs) of Gackt with new videos, and making of features, as well as behind-the scenes of tours, fanclub meets and fanclub concerts. Past boxes have featured cards, gifts and contests.

Now the boxes have begun to feature themes with Gacchan, that he creates specifically for his fans, (for example, playing cowboys) this year's box featured Gackt taking the members of his band to a theme park and undergoing challenges, as well as trying to make surprise visits to fans - one of the more unique challenges being that Gackt had to think of what complaints his staff were making about him - "make more music?" He's not afraid to show himself vulnerable to his fans, (especially vulnerable in the foot area)

I love the Platinum Boxes for their attempt to get something personal of Gackt out to fans - if anyone cares to discuss the boxes, comment here, but please refrain from matters of cost and the Dears/non Dears versions, thank you.

Well, since we've had to do some aggressive moderation as of late, it's time for those of us running fanthropology to bring up a subject that was going to come up in the next few weeks anyway.

We're trying to figure out what to do with it.

Those of us running it are quite busy with various things in and out of fandom - in short, we're not sure we have the time, energy, and inclination to keep running it. In addition, after the various issues with LJ, LJ administration, changing hands, etc. it seemed LJ lost contributors and may not be the best place to run something like this.

So, this post is screened. You can make suggestions here for what you honestly think would be a good idea for doing with/do/for fanthropology.

A few that have come across from private discussions:
1) Just end it. A lot is passed.
2) Freeze it for history's sake.
3) Turn it over to a known group.
4) Do it as a blog that collects links ON the subject only, and take what's submitted.
5) Do it as a blog that takes screened submissions that focus on analysis.
6) Turn it over to any particular individual.

Feel free to suggest any other ideas!

3 Planning Meetings in a Row

Yesterday, we started planning meetings that took the whole day to finish.

The first meeting was a production meeting with Terakado-shi, the A&R manager for Gackt from Nippon Crown.
I think an announcement will be made soon but, it looks like this will become an interesting masterpiece with fresh new original ideas.

The second meeting was the live tour general meeting.
Nearly 20 staff members crammed into a meeting room meant for 12 people, in a thin oxygen situation.
However, the details discussed in the meeting was very dense!

The third meeting was for planning the recording that will begin next month.
The meeting atmosphere was earnest yet at the same time in friendly harmony, with Band Master Cha Cha-san and guitarist You-san also participating.

Fact: The main reason I just...don't fangirl SJH as much as SJM is because other than happy gay performances (and that incredible MV), they continue their regular schedules of DJing and doing-nothing-particularly-exciting-or-out-of-the-ordinary. They don't get interviews where we get to know the members better. They don't get to be on silly variety shows laughing and touching and making all their fans fawn over them. We don't get to laugh at them for retarded antics or sniffle when they talk about some of their hardships or just admire them in general as they show off talents and hard work and a need to grope each other as they talk. SJH is not getting nearly the promotion SJM is, and it's not the language barrier that keeps me from loving them wildly: it's the lack of insight into and time with the members.

It's really not fair to SJH, but I guess they're not "breaking into a new market".

And in the end I still really just want all of SJM's shows to broadcast now, please.

On that note, why is everything SJM-related recently only fancams? China, broadcast these effing shows already! If you put them all off until August, how am I going to watch those, plus the Olympics, plus stress out about moving to STL and packing and buying furniture and paying tuition and ohgod? Oh, Behind the Story/背后的故事 for SJM finally aired, so I should go watch that and its brilliant gay (and Siwon carrying Han Geng in a princess hold, oh yes here I come~!).

Random PSA: You guys, you guys! I don't like EunHae. I didn't when I first got into fandom (through the movie; you can't blame me for attaching to KiHae immediately!), and then I sort of got into it, because of fabulous fics by

parthenope_sing and that one amazing one by

puppycadet (still my favorite EunHae fic in the entire world ♥), but I'm tired of it again. Why? Because fandom won't stfu whining about how they miss it so muuuuch omg, and I'm sorry, because I think they're adorable BFF and that they love each other very much, but I'd rather Donghae go be gay and touchy-feely with other people now, and I'd rather Eunhyuk be cutely fail at almost anyone else. (I think another part of this is because EunHae fics tend to have a Hyukjae characterization I don't like - typically too cool or too emo or something that is not enough cutely fail. I love him for his cutely fail, don't deny me it!)

OKAY SO TL;DR AND NOW THAT I'VE ALIENATED MYSELF FROM ABOUT 80% OF FANDOM--

What with Comic-Con unleashing itself later this week and the success of this summer's comics-based blockbusters, like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Hellboy II, and The Dark Knight, seems like Wired magazine decided to make a little list of other comics-to-film franchises. Of course, they forget the manga-related stuff, like DragonBall Z and Astroboy, as well as other comics in film-treatment development, like Bone and Green Lantern.

Oh well! At least the list has a few exciting gems to share, like the Scott Pilgrim flick starring Michael "Superbad" Cera and the Wolverine prequel.

I recently received a beautiful large Gackt poster which I lovingly restored, so this is going to be the prize for the next GACKT CONTEST. Not sure what the contest will involve, but it will be very easy for anyone to enter and win. This will happen mid-August.

The prize for the GACKT AS KENSHIN CREATIVE CHALLENGE is the 2008 GACKT GOODS POSTCARD SET - which was one of my favorite bits of swag this year. If I can get any 2008 KENSHIN FESTIVAL GOODS, I might replace the prize, if it seems no one's biting, because how could you fail to be inspired by Gackt sama as the Dragon of Echigo? The challenge runs until end of September.

Don't forget, members can also suggest challenges and contests and run them here if they have an idea or something to offer - donations of prizes always welcome!

As long as the com is here, there will be two large prize giveaways, One on Gackt's birthday (this year we gave away the Red and Blue Filmography DVD's) and the Xmas holidays, for that, the Platinum Box for the year will most probably be the gift.

I've been asked if the Gackt Magnetic Paper Doll will ever be offered as a prize, and I'll say yes, if it seems enough would want one. Btw, work is proceeding on the downloadable file for the dolls (RL in the way) I making sure to fit as many costumes-accessories per page, to save on your printing costs.
